Monticello, Kentucky is the gateway to Kentucky's southern lakes region, arguably among the most beautiful and unspoiled stretches of the Bluegrass State. Wayne County literally emerges from the Appalachian hills of eastern Kentucky. While it contains remnants of Eastern Kentucky's rugged landscapes, mostly in the form of low foothills bordering Lake Cumberland, the area is mostly composed of ranch-quality farm lands and rolling landscapes along the southern border with Tennessee.

While by no means its only major industry, Monticello's welcome sign proclaims that it's the luxury houseboat capitol of the world. Driving south on Highway 90 from the nearby community of Somerset, visitors can understand why the city makes this claim as the highway passes a number of manufacturers and retail sales of luxury houseboats. This unique industry developed in response to the hundreds of thousands of seasonal vacationers who travel to the area every year to visit either Lake Cumberland, the largest man-made lake in the world which forms the majority of Wayne County's northern border or Dale Hollow Lake in neighboring Clinton County.

The area is ideal for any family who defines their quality of life by the outdoors. The lakefront opportunities are obvious, but the area is also rated highly for its numerous hiking and camping trails throughout southern Kentucky. A boat ride through Lake Cumberland can easily lead to an excursion up the picturesque Cumberland River through southern Kentucky's most pastoral scenery.

Wayne County provides an ideal living environment. The local park is the focal point for many of the area's community sporting events. This includes two sizeable baseball parks, a play area for young children, tennis courts, and a walking/hiking track.
Wayne County's other populated community, Mill Springs, sits even closer to Lake Cumberland than Monticello. Offering its famous civil war battlefield and its close proximity to Conley Bottom Resort and Marina, this is a wonderful place to call home.
