Swing Bed Program

The Federal Government, through the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1980, Public Law 96-499, provides that certain rural general hospitals of less than 100 beds, may be designated for “Swing Beds”. The primary objective of the Swing Bed Program is to provide short-term, temporary placement for the patient who requires a skilled level of nursing care until: (1) The patient has reached the maximal level of functioning, or (2) a more appropriate setting for the patient’s care is found.
